【Abstract】In the long history of prevention and control of epidemic diseases in China, TCM has made many outstanding achievements. Specifically, Chinese medical experts have explored numerous protection methods based on actively “avoiding toxin qi”, invented variolation for effective prevention of smallpox and accumulated effective experience in epidemic prevention based on rich practice. In addition to supporting the prosperity of the Chinese nation, TCM also made new contributions to the prevention and control of epidemic encephalitis B and SARS after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Generations of medical experts have accumulated extremely rich clinical experience in prevention and treatment of epidemic diseases. Up to the late Qing Dynasty, a complete syndrome differentiation system for prevention and control of epidemic diseases was established through the refining of theories; at the same time, a number of technical methods for prevention and control of epidemic diseases were developed. TCM has a long history in prevention and control of epidemic diseases, and during the rampant epidemic of COVID-19, the unique prevention and control theories and diversified technical methods are worthy of profound exploration and application. TCM and western medicine have their own strengths in the prevention and control of epidemic diseases, and their respective strengths should be integrated to jointly fight against COVID-19. TCM should be developed following the principle of “inheriting the essence and insisting on innovation”, and its role should be strengthened in the future infectious disease response system with Chinese characteristics. The objective of “integrating TCM with western medicine” should be implemented.
